French cuisine served with an American flare

Patrick Jean has taken his French roots to America’s plates. He is the owner of “O” Bar and Grill in Trumbull and The Brasserie and “O” Bar Martini Bar and Lounge in Fairfield. Jean started operating restaurants 15 years ago when he opened the Saint Tropez Bistro in Fairfield.

At Saint Tropez Bistro, named after his hometown in France, Jean paired his knowledge of French food with his chef’s input to create a delicious meal. But, as the economy took a downturn, diners were less likely to go a pricier, fancier meal.

Diners “want to dine casually, they want to dine at an affordable price,” Jean said.

And that’s how The Brasserie was born. It opened in 2010, and offers a more casual and inviting atmosphere, with lower pricing. Menu items for dinner include foiegras for $16.95, to a burger dish at $11.

“The restaurant has a more modern and sleek look, serving an array of dishes from tapas to burgers, to seafood to steak,” the restaurant’s website, stated.

Jean said since switching to the more casual dining format, he has found success.

He said the restaurant is a place for lunch, dinner, or to come for a snack and a glass of wine.

The restaurant has a bar as well as a dining room, a private room and offers catering. Hours for lunch are: Mondays through Saturdays, 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Hours for dinner are: Mondays through Thursdays, 5 to 9:30 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays, 5 to 10 p.m. and Sundays 4:30 to 9 p.m. For those late night diners, there is a special late night menu.

Before The Brasserie was born, Jean opened the “O” Bar and Grill in Trumbull. It opened its doors in August 2009. Mirrors line the walls, lending to the openness of the dining room, which is a relaxed, sophisticated setting.

The restaurant has a patio, which can seat 50. At the bar, there are 42″ flat screen televisions.

“O” Bar is an American Bistro with a modern flair; there are burgers, nachos and escargot on the menu. Items include vegetarian dishes ranging from $9 to $16 a dish, pizza, a Philly steak sandwich, a variety of salads and entrees from seafood to mushroom ravioli. There is a children’s menu as well with classic American fare. Even though some kids do enjoy ordering off the grown-up menu.

“A lot of kids come,” Jean said. There was one time where a child, seven or eight, was asked “where he wanted to go for his birthday, and he said here because they serve escargots,” which he loved.
