While many theatergoers packed The Shubert during the recent run of “The Jersey Boys,” many still can’t shake the show from their minds. It has a way of lingering long in the pleasure category and that’s where it will be until you replace it with other musicals coming your way this season. You may have to wait a while to get strains of “Oh, What a Night” out of your head, but making a strong attempt at moving fast into your fond musical memories is “Million Dollar Quartet,” which plays Jan. 8 – 13 at The Bushnell in Hartford.
This is a musical inspired by a recording session in which Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins came together for one unforgettable moment in time. Songs like “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Sixteen Tons,” “Great Balls of Fire,” and “Walk the Line” are featured in this musical. If you’re wondering who Carl Perkins is, know that he is the man who wrote “Blue Suede Shoes.” It was only because of an automobile accident that the song was given over to Elvis.
While The Bushnell has a pretty terrific season coming, it will cap off the season with yet another memorable musical “Billy Elliott” in June, 2013. This show features the music of Elton John. The story, however, is about a boy who falls out of a boxing ring and into a ballet class, where he discovers his true talent.
Another uplifting musical that will chase away the strains of the Four Seasons, if only for a while, is the upcoming Palace Theatre presentation of “Dream Girls,” which comes to Waterbury in May, 2013. This Broadway musical is based on the success stories of women’s vocal groups like The Supremes and The Shirelles as well as Jackie Wilson and James Brown.
Meanwhile, musicals like “West Side Story,” still considered the best musical ever written with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, comes to the Palace in Waterbury on Nov. 24 and 25, 2012 while the Shubert in New Haven has a tour in May, 2013.
In between there are other musical events such as “The Sister Act” based on the movie starring Whoopie Goldberg, which plays at The Bushnell in April 2013, or “Experience the Beatles with Rain,” which arrives at the Palace in Waterbury in March 2013.
So it will take a while to let “The Jersey Boys” with all its upbeat music and stellar performances fade, but seeing another theatrical event will quickly create new memories. There are plenty of great musicals coming to Connecticut. There are even shows like “Shrek” and “The Addams Family” that will delight the entire family. This new 2012-2013 season will dispel any remnants of “Pretty Baby” until some theater or other manages to bring “The Jersey Boys” back again.
