Following the tragic shootings that took place in Orlando Florida at the Pulse night club, Daniela Sikora, music director for the Ridgefield Chorale, felt that she needed to do something to honor the victims.

Our Reply To Violence – A Concert will take place at The Ridgefield Playhouse on Thursday, June 23 at 7:30 p.m. “This concert is in response to the terrible massacre that took place at the Pulse night club. This free concert is to help heal, honor and remember the victims and to let the world that we will not tolerate evil.”

This concert will feature performances by Bernie Williams, Debbie Gravitte, Daniel C. Levine, Daniela Sikora, The Ridgefield Chorale, The Ridgefield Symphony and more.  Sikora added “The quote below is why we are naming this concert Our Reply To Violence — it was written by Leonard Bernstein in response to why, two days after the assassination of President Kennedy he, along with the New York Philharmonic, performed Mahler’s Second Symphony – The Resurrection. The excerpt below was a part of his answer. And it is why we, as lovers of the arts, will be doing this concert on June 23rd.”

We musicians, like everyone else, are numb with sorrow at this murder, and with rage at the senselessness of the crime. But this sorrow and rage will not inflame us to seek retribution; rather they will inflame our art. Our music will never again be quite the same. This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before. And with each note we will honor the spirit of John Kennedy, commemorate his courage, and reaffirm his faith in the Triumph of the Mind.

— Leonard Bernstein
